Glucosamine Questions
Glucosamine??!? I am currently taking Glucosamine with Calcium and Vitamin D tablets. On the box there is written that they are good for maintaining healthy joints and muscles and bones. Is Glucosamine that ingredient that re-builts that "jelly / cap" that we have around; covering the joints. If not then what type of ingredient does all this? Thanks in advance!
Glucosamine tablets made for humans, is it okay to feed them to dogs? Dogs have their own glucosamine supplements, but aren't they nearly the same thing as the glucosamine supplements made for humans? I want to feed my dog glucosamine, because I've seen some good results from it. If I buy glucosamine at petco, it's $26. It's $18 at Costco (the one for humans). Is there really a difference between glucosamine tablets for humans, and the ones for dogs?
What is the difference between glucosamine sulfate and n-acetyl glucosamine? A recent study used n-acetyl glucosamine for treatment of autoimmune diseases like MS, type 1 diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease and the result is that it seemed to help stop the immune system's faulty attack on healthy tissue. Can someone tell me what the real difference is between the regular glucosamine sold for joint health (sulfate) and this n-acetyl glucosamine? Could glucosamine sulfate have the same type of cellular effect as N-A-G, maybe if taken in larger doses, or is it just too different? I have several autoimmune diseases and want to try it, but N-A-G is next to impossible to get in Germany for less than a ridiculous fortune and US vitamin stores seemingly won't ship to Germany (iHerb, Mother Nature, Amazon retailers, Vitamin Shoppe, etc, etc.). However, I can get glucosamine sulfate here without a problem.
What are good brands of glucosamine supplements? I'm starting my older beagle on glucosamine supplements soon; she'll be 10 soon, and I figure no harm starting my 7 year old girl on them too. There are quite a few brands to pick from, so I was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations. The pet stores I have visited carry Actipet, Nupro Joint Support and NaturVet. Any comments on these brands? I'll be in Melbourne in December, so maybe I'll pick some Sasha's Blend up. Thanks!
What are the best brands for Glucosamine Sulphate? I have seen products with Glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate. But I did not find Glucosamine Sulphate. Various brands contain a variety of other ingradients like Uniflex, Hyaluronic acid in different concentrations (which is very confusing). And i also read that, rather than a pill form , liquid form is more useful. Is this true? Please help, because they are very expensive. If anyone knows what is the dose we need for glucosamine and chondroitin. Thanks in advance.
How many calories are there in Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets? As glucosamine is based on sugar, surely it is quite a lot? One of my best friends has started taking them and she is putting on weight. Liliam - they don;t list the calories on the box She is taking them for her joint pain but has seen weight gain since she has started them 2 months ago
How much glucosamine should I give my dog? My 9 year old dog has arthritis. I'm going to start giving her glucosamine to help. She's about 104 pounds and the glucosamine I have is Glucosamine HCl, 1500 mg per tablet. My vet said one per day would be fine, but I also read that doubling the dose for the first 1-2 weeks helps. So would it be okay to give her 2 tablets per day instead of 1? Or would that hurt her?
Has anyone ever used human glucosamine for a horse? One of my horses is stiff and sore after a busy show season. I priced out horse joint formulas of all different brands, a month's supply costs $40-$60. The main active ingredient is glucosamine, which is scientifically proven to help SOME people and animals with arthritis. I read labels carefully. The horse formulas recommend you start with 5000 ml glucosamine for the first 3 weeks and then taper down to about 2500 mls daily. They say you'll need up to 2 months to see any improvement. I then priced out human glucosamine at Wal-Mart. I ended up buying a month's supply in capsules for $13. I could open the capsules and sprinkle 5000 mls(10 capsules in total) in my horse's grain daily, maybe adding oil first to help it stick. Has anyone tried this? Any tips or problems? Any reason it shouldn't work? The active ingredient should be safe and good quality. I could ask my pharmacist if the capsules are safe if opened and eaten whole, too.(I'm a nurse) Any other ideas?
Is it safe to give a dog glucosamine capsules? I think my dog has arthiritis and i read on the internet that glucosamine should be good. I have some glucosamine capsules that are meant for humans, so is it safe to give to my dog? Btw, it is Glucosamine Sulfate. Also, is aspirin alright to?
GLUCOSAMINE is it any good to help against Arthritis? I am in good shape and good health, but in my family arthritis and the likes are genetically present. As the years pass I feel more and more soreness and pain, mostly in my fingers, but lately my shoulder started to hurt. I am not taking any specific medicine and try to work out 5 times a week, some leight weight lifting and also some cardio. I am not overweight and try to eat reasonably. A friend of mine suggested taking Glucosamine tablets to help reduce pain and prevent further problems. Any suggestions? Personal experience? Thxs a lot in advance.
Do you really think oral Glucosamine and HA supplements work,or are we just throwing our money down the drain? The markets have become bombarded with all kinds of claims, if you ask most vets they will say there is no sufficient evidence because these companies do not have to go through FDA approval to substainuate their products claims. Do you think the companies that put out these Glucosamine and Hyaluronic Acid Supplements are just cashing in on Consumer fears, and hopes that "if the price is low enough, more people will buy it, and that giving the horse anything is better than nothing"?
Will Glucosamine Chondroitin + MSM help or hinder an ear cartilage piercing? I got an Industrial piercing in my ear. I was told it can take 6 months to a year for the holes in the cartilage to heal around the piercing. A few months back I started taking Glucosamine, Chondroitin + MSM supplements to help with cartilage I tore in my hip. I was wondering if such supplements would also influence ear cartilage, and if so would it be in a positive or negative way? Thanks!
Where are the cheapest vegetarian Glucosamine supplements available? My mum is a vegetarian and so can not take the normal Glucosamine supplements (with fish oils etc) but we have found an vegetarian alternative in Boots the chemist but they are very expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives anywhere (maybe on the internet)? Also, she is taking these for joint pain problems, has taking Glucosamine helped anyone else with similar problems? Lastly (!) the pain that she has is in her knees and also in her feet which makes it difficult for her to sit on the floor or move around quickly. Are there any gentle exercises that anyone could suggest? Thanks!
Can my cat get human glucosamine? My cat gets glucosamine supplements from the vet called 'Seraquin' for her arthritis and i wondered because vets aren't the most cost affected places in the world whether or not she can get Glucosamine tablets from health stores for humans?
glucosamine/chondroitin--does it work as a preventative? I'm 31, a natural healing junkie. I've got sore knees from a lifetime of playing tennis. I've got some carpal tunnel from typing/restaurant work. I've always been interested in gluc/chond supplements but reluctant to pay the big bucks for them. walgreens has some on sale buy one get one free and i'm tempted. will they be beneficial to a mostly healthy non-arthritis sufferer? does just glucosamine work or do i need to get the mixed formula? any tips about what to watch out for when buying--standardized etc? gluc sulfate versus other formulas?
Have you tried Glucosamine supplements for your dog? My dog is not that old- only 4 1/2, but she gets very lame after even light exercise. The vet was not able to detect anything wrong with her hips or rear legs by palpating her while under anesthesia (while getting porcupine quills pulled). I guess the next step is to get her x-rayed, but in the meantime I was considering Glucosamine supplements. Have any of you seen positive results from the use of Glucosamine supplements?
Does Glucosamine really help your joints heal? I have been having pains in my shoulders. I'm trying to keep active but it seems that my sleep is being disturbed on a nightly basis because of aching in my shoulders and I cannot find a good resting place without some pain at night. I heard Glucosamine can help heal joints that are suffering from damaged ligaments and tendons. There are a few different kinds out there. I would like to hear from people who are trying it, which type your are taking, if it really is helping you and where you get it at a reasonable price. Please be specific. Thanks!
Has anyone ever known a dog to get sick from taking Glucosamine? I have given her dosage in the past and found out that I was giving her too much. I have started again recently, giving her the proper amount according to her vet. She is a very large (not fat) Golden Retriever, so he said to give her 1500 mg per day (split 750 twice a day). She refused to eat this morning and still had not eaten when my husband checked on her at lunch - that is not like her at all. She is also very lethargic. My first intuition is to stop the Glucosamine again, but I don't want her joints to go bad. She is only 8 years old.
Glucosamine...? I am twenty years old. For the past six months I have been getting into running. I had a bit knee pain. Took some time off. Now I am thinking of taking glucosamine when I get back to running again. Is there any positive, or negative aspects of glucosamine? Thanks.
How good is glucosamine and chondroitin for hip dysplasia? My dog was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. I read online that a supplement of glucosamine and chondroitin could make a difference. I talked to the vet and he said it was okay, but he tried to sell me Cosequin, which costs $40. I was wondering if there's a cheaper option? There are many store brands of that supplement that cost a lot less, but they are intended for human use. Can I use them for my 11 pound baby dog? I want to start giving them to him asap, but I'm really broke and can't afford the $40 Cosequin. Is there any difference between Cosequin and store brands? Please help me.
Glucosamine for a dog without arthritis? I have a 7-month old akita male, and this breed is very prone to joint problems, especially hip dysplasia. I was wondering is it a good idea to give him glucosamine supplements to keep his joints healthy and potentially prevent any future joint problems?
glucosamine for chondromalacia does it work? hi, im 17 years old male who plays tennis which is how i got chondromalacia. i was wondering it glucosamine supplements like Move Free Advanced will help or will only glucosamine sulfate only help it? and what is the difference of the two?
Do you find that glucosamine DEFINITELY works for you? Noone seems to be sure about whether glucosamine really works or not. Some say it's just the placebo effect. Some say it only helps ease the pain of arthritis, some say it heps cure it. Some say it also helps tendon pain too. What's YOUR experience?
Cavalier with calcified discs in back? Would glucosamine help? My dog has been diagnosed with calcified discs in the neck. How likely is this condition to deteriorate? Will giving him glucosamine tablets help? I haven't asked a vet yet and not planning to give anything without advise just wanted to see if anyone else was in a similar situation. Sorry I have been unclear the vet diagnosed my dog, but I have not asked him about glucosamine yet.
What dosage is best for glucosamine chondroitin and can anyone tell me a little more about them? I suffer with early arthritis in various joints but my major problem is discular degeneration in my lower back causing referred pain and inflexibility due to muscular spasm. I have read lots of information on the benefits of glucosamine, and chondroitin. What dosage should I take of these supplements as a chronic sufferer, (as against someone who doesn't have the problems I have yet)? I have seen suppliers advertising various strengths of these supplements ranging from 100 to 1500mg. How much of the maximum dosage can the body take before it passes the remainder as waste, (as in Vitamin C)? Is there any advantage to taking the maximum dose? Can anyone recommend a supplier, that is inexpensive - these supplements seem to be quite expensive if you go to the high street, (i.e. Holland & Barrett).
Will taking glucosamine make my nose get larger? I know this may sound silly, but will taking glucosamine supplements possibly make my nose get larger? I don't want it to. The nose has cartilage in it, and glucosamine builds cartilage. Should I be worried?
Is it safe to take glucosamine when pregnant? I am young - 23 - and have bad arthritis in my knees from being in dance when I was younger and me and my husband are planning on having a baby within the next year or so. Well the only thing that eliminates my knee pain is glucosamine and I was wondering if it was safe to take if I was pregnant. (and please don't say I'm too young to have kids-I've already been told that today)
